Nomenclatural note
Substitute name for Grateloupia pinnata (Postels & Ruprecht) Setchell, an llegitimate later homonym of Grateloupia pinnata (J.D. Hooker & Harvey) J. Agardh. - (24 August 2006) - G.M. Guiry
Taxonomic note
"An rbcL sequence (GenBank MG762005) from a topotype specimen (UBC A91023) of Grateloupia postelsii P.G. Parkinson [Basionym: Iridaea pinnata Postels & Ruprecht = Grateoupia pinnata (Postels & Ruprecht) Setchell & N.L. Gardner, non G. pinnata (J.D.Hooker & Harvey) J. Agardh: in sinu Norfolk ad littoral Amer. bor.-occ. (Norfolk Sound is the name James Cook gave Sitka Sound, Alaska)] was identical to a sequence of Grateloupia californica from Monterey, California (FJ013038) and differed from Mexican specimens by a single base pair. Since G. californica has a type locality of LaJolla and is reported from elsewhere in California (Miller et al. 2009), it seems reasonable to assume that all of these specimens are indeed the same species as the LaJolla type. These results indicate that G. postelsii is a later, heterotypic synonym of G. californica. To our knowledge, Sitka Sound represents the northern limit of the species.
Grateloupia californica is sometimes mistakenly identified as Grateloupia doryphora, a Peruvian species that is genetically if not morphologically distinct (Gavio & Fredericq 2002)." (Gabrielson & Lindstrom 2018: 132). - (08 December 2022) - M.D. Guiry
