Description: Small-to-medium-sized (18-55 µm) thecate dinoflagellate of spherical shape with a median and circular cingulum. Sulcus restricted to the hypocone, has at the left side a conspicuous list and is characterized by a prominent flagellar pore. A small apical horn may be present. Plate formula: Po, X, 3', 1a, 6", 4c, 6s, 5"', 2"". First apical plate 5-sided. Thecal plates smooth, sometimes with broad intercalary bands. Cytoplasm clear, nucleus spherical, no chloroplasts, nutrition by pallium-feeding on diatoms and other phytoplankton. Cysts round, smooth, brown in color. Marine plankton, in coastal waters. Emend.
