The type species (lectotype) of the genus Porphyra is Porphyra purpurea (Roth) C.Agardh.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Boreophyllum aestivale (S.C.Lindstrom & Fredericq) S.C.Lindstrom.

General Environment
This is a marine species.
Description
Gametophyte foliose, monostromatic, ovate to orbiculate, sometimes lanceolate, base umbilicate, often deeply ruffled, margin frilly, at times polystromatic. Thalli to at least 30 cm diameter; adhering incompletely to paper. Sterile thalli 45-50 mm thick. Color a very pale pink to a pale grayish purple, sometimes purple. Apophysis tan to pale brownish. Thallus monoecious and sectored by a vertical line into male and female 'halves' (possibly also dioecious). Fertile (female) sectors 65-95 mm thick. Reproductive structures marginal, extending inward in a mottled pattern. Submarginal tissue paler than the adjacent outer zygotosporangial and inner sterile tissues. Spermatangia in packets of 2 x 2-4 x 4-8. Zygotosporangia in packets of 2 x 2 x 4.
