Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Kapraunia schneideri (Stuercke & Freshwater) Savoie & G.W.Saunders.

Holotype locality: Wrightsville Beach, New Hanover County, North Carolina, USA (34º12.069' N, 077º49.120'W); (Stuercke & Freshwater 2010: 302) Holotype (fig. 1): D.F. Kapraun; 30 November 1973; growing on floating dock; MICH; [=WNC-8782] (Stuercke & Freshwater 2010: 302) Notes: Holotype: 3 specimens (male, female and tetrasporophyte) mounted on sheet. Isotypes: WNC (WNC-8783).

Distributional notes
Delnatte & Wynne (2016) note: "According to Stuerke & Freshwater (2008) collections in the Western Atlantic going under the name Polysiphonia denudata do not correspond to that European-based species. In a later paper, Stuercke & Freshwater (2010) described the new species P. schneideri (with a type locality of Wrightsville Beach, New Hanover County, North Carolina, USA) for material that had been previously mis-identified as P. denudata (Rodríguez-Prieto et al. 1999)." - (20 October 2016) - M.D. Guiry
