Taxonomic note
"This species, introduced into the Mediterranean Sea through the Suez Canal (Cormaci et al. 2004: 173), was recorded in that Sea only once by Aleem (1948: 89, figs 5-7) from Port Said (Egypt). According to Verlaque et al. (2015: 228) the species is character-ized by the following characters: i. thallus laminar, fan-shaped with denticulate edges; ii. pseudoparenchymatous structure with a 2-3 layered medulla of large elongate cells and a cortex of small cells; iii. procarps with an auxiliary cell and a three-celled carpogonial branch." Distributional note
Reported from Alexandria in Egypt (Aleem 1948) as a migrant through the Suez Canal from the Red Sea, but there have been no further reports (Verlaque et al. 2015: 229). - (05 November 2015) - M.D. Guiry
