Abstract:
Desmids are small green-coloured algae referred to the families Closteriaceae, Desmidiaceae, Mesotaeniaceae and Peniaceae (Streptophycophyta, Zygnematophyceae, Zygnematales) with engagingly symmetrical morphologies found exclusively in freshwater both in the plankton and in films of water on vegetation. The west of Ireland has long been recognised as a 'hotspot' for desmid diversity, but no attempt has been made to list all of the desmids reported from lreland since the beginning of the 20th century. In the present catalogue, 541 species and 365 infraspecific taxa are listed with nomenclatural, taxonomic and distributional notes to facilitate the task of assessing Irish plant diversity.
