Abstract:
Abstract: Spirogyra multiconjugata, a species of Zygnemataceae found in the
Southern Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina, is proposed as a new species for
science on the basis of the hitherto unreported occurrence of three types of conjugation
in the same species: scalariform, lateral and terminal and on basis of the
uniqueness of the features of its zygospores that were thoroughly analysed and described
in acetolized material by both light and scanning electron microscopy. This
species is the first bona fide species of the Punctata group reported for Argentina.
