Description: Thalli prostrate, distichously branched, polysiphonous with 4-10 uncorticated pericentral cells, the number sometimes variable within the same species. Thalli are dorsiventrally oriented with exogenously produced dimorphic lateral branches, 1) unbranched determinate and 2) branched and potentially indeterminate. Some branched laterals developing as main axes, spreading the thallus. Branching pattern basically with two successive segments having a lateral of each kind on one side, this pair alternating with another pair on the opposite side in the same sequence. One branch of a pair, usually the short, unbranched one, is formed in a more dorsal position between lateral pericentrals than the other. Branched trichoblasts produced only in distal regions of determinate laterals. Unicellular rhizoids produced from ventral pericentrals, cut off from pericentral cell. Life history isomorphic; reproductive structures located on short lateral branchlets. Tetrasporangial stichidia, usually distal; tetrasporangia, 1 in each segment, in a short straight series of up to 9; stichidia often with curved tip. Male capitula replacing trichoblasts on short determinate laterals, ovaliform, with a sterile tips. Procarps on modified trichoblasts, distal on determinate branchlets on either main axis or indeterminate laterals. Supporting cell bears a 4-celled carpogonial branch and a single sterile group. Cystocarps ovoid to urceolate, with prominent ostioles.

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Díaz-Tapia, P., Maggs, C.A., West, J.A. & Verbruggen, H. (2017). Analysis of chloroplast genomes and a supermatrix inform reclassification of the Rhodomelaceae (Rhodophyta). Journal of Phycology 53(5): 920-937, 2 figs.

Comments: Usually epiphytic on larger algae, in most warm temperate to tropical regions throughout the world.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
