Original publication and holotype designation: Henry, E.C. & South, G.R. (1987). Phyllariopsis gen. nov. and a reappraisal of the Phyllariaceae Tilden 1935 (Laminariales, Phaeophyceae). Phycologia 26: 9-16.
Description: Holdfast a simple disc or with short unbranched haptera, formed by growth from or expansion of an initial simple attachment disc. Stipe short, 5-9 cm. Blades annual, to 1 m tall, simple or becoming lacerated with age. Costae lacking, hair-pits present on young blades. Mucilage ducts lacking, medulla containing long, thick-walled longitudinal conducting cells (solenocysts) and lateral connecting cells (allelocysts) rather than sieve tubes. Sporangial sori formed on lower parts of the lamina, paraphyses lacking a hyaline appendage, zoospores with a red eyespot. Gametophytes of P. brevipes dioecious but never becoming filamentous and not sexually dimorphic. Marine, rarely in littoral, usually in deep water to 85 m from the Strait of Messina in the Mediterranean to Atlantic France.
