Original publication and holotype designation: Agardh, J.G. (1842). Algae maris Mediterranei et Adriatici, observationes in diagnosin specierum et dispositionem generum. pp. [i]-x, 1-164. Parisiis [Paris]: Apud Fortin, Masson et Cie.
Description: Thallus erect, epilithic or epiphytic, filiform, branched attached to substratum with a minute discoid holdfast. Axis with leading filament which is a monopodium terminating in an assimilatory filament. Meristematic region above and among youngest ramifications. No internal downwardgrowing hyphae. Cortex composed of assimilatory filaments, hyaline hairs, and reproductive organs. Assimilatory filaments of one kind, curved, with cylindrical to barrel-shaped cells below and moniliform above. Unilocular sporangia globular to pyriform, plurilocular sporangia multiseriate, lanceolate. Both borne at base of assimilatory filaments within cortex. Life history not known. Distributed in the Azores, and on warm-temperate coasts of Europe including the Mediterranean.
