Climacosorus Sauvageau, 1933

Holotype species: Climacosorus mediterraneus Sauvageau

Original publication and holotype designation: Sauvageau, C. (1933). Sur le Climacosorus, nouveau genre de Phéosporée. Bull. Stat. Biol. Arachon 30: 189-196.

Description: Heterotrichous thallus organization. The macrothallus is a branched, mostly uniseriate filament ending in a false hair (pseudohair). A weakly developed growth zone may be present at the base of the hair. The growth of the filaments is intercalary and slightly localized. Unilocular sporangia occur singly or in whorls, in the latter case by repeated formation of oblique or longitudinal divisions in intercalary meristematic cells. The meristematic cells are separated by a number of inactive cells resulting in clusters of sporangia along the erect filament. Plurilocular sporangia are formed on the microthallus at low temperature and short day conditions. The macro- and microthallus are physically connected so the life history is apparently of the direct type (Nygren 1987).

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
