Description: Thallo repente, adsubstratum lateexpanso, stellifico aut inaequaliter ambitu, usque ad 1 mm lato, filamentis prostratis, ramosis, ad marginem liberis, ad centrum inter se coalitis, stratum monostromaticum,formantibus. Ramis praecipuis,distinctis, sub apicem. crescentis, pennatis. Cellulis valde coloratis, chromatophoris satis multis (2-5). Pili basi meristemo, sed non vagina, instructi, adsunt. Sporocystis pluriloculariis ad centralem partem aut ad stromatosas regiones, saepe dense congestis, ectocarporum istis similibus, erectis, sessilibus, aut interdum lateraliter, obliquiter, horizontaliter in ramuli loco dispositis. Zoosporis in germinationesplus minusve cito in disco confluentes evolutis.

Comments: This genus was erected to accommodate a monostromatic plant with a syntagmatic central part and a margin of free filaments. The genus lacks upright assimilating filaments, those being formed are transformed into plurilocular sporangia. True hairs are present, presumably without a basal sheath. Pedersen (1984) discussed the justification of this genus which in vegetative characteristics is very close to for example Hecatonema. If further studies show that Phaeostromatella is an independent genus, it seems to find a natural placing in the Punctariaceae considering the fact that sheathed hairs may be difficult to observe unless material with hairs in many different stages of development is available.
