Original publication and holotype designation: Falkenberg, P. (1878). Ueber Discosporangium, ein neues Phaeosporeen- Genus. Mittheilungen aus der Zoologischen Station zu Neapel 1: 54-66, 1 pl.

Description: Small (1.5-4 cm) tufted irregularly branched epiphytic filaments growing by apical cells, long-cylindric subapical cells remaining undivided. Vegetative cells containing numerous discoid chloroplasts without pyrenoids. Negative eau de Javel reaction. Reproduction by peculiar lateral, sessile plurilocular zoidangia arising from the middle of vegetative cells, forming a one-layered plate of locules.
