Padinopsis Ercegovic, 1955

Holotype species: Padinopsis adriatica Ercegovic

Original publication and holotype designation: Ercegovic, A. (1955). Contribution a la connaissance des Éctocarpes (Ectocarpus) del'Adriatique moyenne. Acta Adriatica 7: 1-74.

Description: Delicate, olive-brown fan-shaped blades up to 3 cm tall, 3.5 cm broad, growing by a margin of apical cells, increasing in breadth by longitudinal division of apical cells, attached by down-growing rhizoids. Older plants becoming lobed by retardation or cessation of division in apical cells in scattered regions of the margin. Blade margin monostromatic, soon becoming distromatic by a longitudinal division of subapical cells. Cells of blades containing discoid chloroplasts and appearing quadrangular in transverse section (rather than the circular outline of cells found in Syringoderma). Cells of blades not dorsiventrally differentiated, but dorsal surface of blade bearing 2-4 concentric (parallel to the apical margin), interrupted zones of fine hairs with basal meristems of short cells above a series of one to several round, darkly pigmented cells forming the attachment to the blade. Reproduction unknown. Marine, known only from a single collection at the island of Jabuka in the central Adriatic, growing on crustose coralline algae at 50-70 m.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
