Protomonostroma K.L.Vinogradova, 1969
Holotype species: Protomonostroma undulatum (Wittrock) K.L.Vinogradova
Original publication and holotype designation: Vinogradova, K.L. (1969). K. sistematike poryadka Ulvales (Chlorophyta) s.l. A contribution to the taxonomy of the order Ulvales. Botanicheskij Zhurnal SSSR 54: 1347-1355, one un-numbered figure. [in Russian with English title and summary]
Description: Thalli forming erect monostromatic and lanceolate to ovate blades to 10-20 cm. Blades light green, aggregated and very delicate. Cells polygonal and isodiametric in upper portions and at margins near base; elsewhere more elongate, toward base with long rhizoidal projections than can penetrate host. Cells uninucleate with single parietal chloroplast and one pyrenoid without traversing thylakoid membranes. Plants with heteromorphic life history that is apparently asexual. Vegetative cells in blade differentiate into sporangia with spore release by fragmentation of fertile area of frond and dissolution of cell walls. Quadriflagellate swarmers from blades settle and give rise to squat Codiolum phase which also releases quadriflagellate zoospores. These spores germinate to form a filament that develops into the blade without an intervening saccate stage. Both swarmer types with distinct clumping behaviour lasting several minutes in which they aggregate with posterior ends touching and flagellate ends free. Swarmers without eyespots and without phototaxis.

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.
Gender: This genus name is currently treated as neuter.
Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Gabrielson, P.W., Lindstrom, S.C. & O'Kelly, C.J. (2012). Keys to the seaweeds and seagrasses of Southeast Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon. Phycological Contribution Number 8. pp. [i]-iv, 1-192. Hillsborough, North Carolina: PhycoID.
Comments: Protomonostroma undulatum is widely distributed in North Atlantic and North Pacific Oceans, Argentina; P. rosulatum Vingradova known only from King George Island, South Shetland Islands. Genus typically an epiphyte of other algae in the intertidal region. Protomonostroma previously included with Monostroma but segregated based on life history and developmental features. Other species currently placed in Monostroma may be transferred as taxonomic concepts are modified. Protomonostroma and Gayralia only genera currently assigned to Gayraliaceae.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
