Description: Thallus to 3 m long attached by conical holdfast with radiating, branched haptera. Short, cylindrical stipe to 8 mm diameter. Main axis bears opposite, flat lateral branches. Marginal air bladders develop in the axils of some laterals. Growth from an apical meristem. Thallus is parenchymatous and differentiated into a meristoderm of small cells with numerous chloroplasts, a cortex of larger, vacuolate cells and a filamentous medulla. Life history is diplontic. Sexual reproduction is oogamous. Individuals are monoecious with terete receptacles to 12 mm long and 4 mm broad, on margins of main axis and adaxial margins of laterals. Conceptacles are uni- or bisexual containing antheridia and/or oogonia. Oogonia measure 70-150 µm and contain one egg. Antheridia are ellipsoid, 15-21 x 10-12 µm on branched paraphyses.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
