Description: Plants are non-calcified, small (to 3 mm broad) crusts epiphytic on larger algae. The hypothallus is a single layer of radiating cells not attached by rhizoids and giving rise dorsally to single short files of unbranched, erect filaments. Tetrasporangia are separated by paraphyses in continuous dorsal nemathecia and are very irregularly divided, with patterns ranging from zonate to irregularly cruciate occuring within a given nemathecium (Abbott and Hollenberg 1976: Fig. 315). Spermatangia are unknown, and putative cystocarps are ostiolate and protuberant, although developmental details are unknown.

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Gender: This genus name is currently treated as feminine.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Schneider, C.W. & Wynne, M.J. (2007). A synoptic review of the classification of red algal genera a half a century after Kylin's "Die Gattungen der Rhodophyceen". Botanica Marina 50: 197-249.

Comments: Distribution: Recorded only from two localities in San Diego County, California (Abbott and Hollenberg 1976). A number of genera have been described which have peyssonnelioid anatomy but for which carposporophytes and/or tetrasporophytes are unknown. Several have proved to be tetrasporic phases in the life histories of other genera, but others are still to have their independent status and their ordinal and familial placements confirmed. Denizot (1968) regards these genera as having uncertain taxonomic standing, but those which have not been established as life-history phases and later-described peyssonnelioid genera are treated here for convenience.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
