Description: Thalli unicellular, not embedded in mucilage envelope. Cells 10-240 (-530) x 1-6.5 µm, straight to curved to sinuate, most forms with elongated and pointed tips. Cells with smooth cell walls, uninucleate; chloroplasts central or parietal, ribbon like, band-shaped or spirally twisted. Pyrenoids multiple (2-14) in a series; in the one studied species, thylakoids traverse pyrenoids. Asexual reproduction unknown in type species, in other species by autospores, 2-8 per sporangium in a linear series; released by rupture of parental cell wall. Flagellated stages and sexual reproduction unknown. Closteriopsis planktonic in freshwater; cosmopolitan, but some taxa endemic, e.g. C. scolia from Cuba. Closteriopsis is a segregate from Monoraphidium from which it differs based on presence of multiple pyrenoids per cell and absence of mucilage envelope. Genus differs from Keratococcus with single pyrenoid per cell. Species distinguished based on chloroplast morphology and cell size and shape. Genus also assigned to Chlorellaceae by some authors.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
