Description: Thalli colonial, forming 2-celled coenobia embedded in mucilaginous matrix. Cells ovate, 5.4-13 x 2.4-6 µm. Cell wall with cellulosic fibers, sometimes covered by granules. Cells uninucleate; chloroplast single and parietal withot pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by autospores; 2-4 per sporangium but organized in 1-2 coenobia; spore release by partial dissolution of parental cell wall. Sexual reproduction and flagellated stages unknown. Didymocystis planktonic in freshwater ponds and lakes; reported from Europe (widely distributed), United States and Asia. Genus not included in Scenedesmaceae because of presence of cellulosic cell wall and absence of pyrenoids.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
