Description: Cells solitary, circular or elliptical in valve view, rectangular in girdle view with elevations. Probably attached to sand grains in the marine inshore region but rarely recorded in live material. Many fossil species extending back to the Cretaceous. Huistedt (1927-66) comments upon the variability of the valve markings of this genus. Valves with two or three conspicuous ocelli on elevations and a valve face that is ridged or variously moulded. The ocelli have radiating sectored rows of porelli and are surrounded by thick ridges of silica; they are often located slightly oblique to the centre line of elliptical forms and a second axis of markings is situated at right angles to the ocellar (elliptical) axis. Fine and relatively inconspicuous rows of areolae radiate in groups between the ridges. The valves are extremely thick. The outer apertures of the areolae appear unoccluded whilst the inner almost certainly have domed vela. The areolae of the valve mantle form distinct rows and a clear circumferential ridge, sometimes developed into a distinct rim, divides these from the valve face areolae. Internally the ocelli are sunken, with no indication of the circumferential thickenings so obvious on the outside. Rimoportulae appear to be absent in our material; P.A. Sims (personal communication) has fossil material with extremely inconspicuous marginal rimoportulae and Simonsen (1979) also reports their presence in fossil but not modern material. The copulae are split and are coarsely or finely poroid.

Comments: Rattray (1888b) revised the genus but there has been little systematic work since, though many species have been described, most of them fossil. The species of the genus Pseudoauliscus Leudiger-Fortmorel are usually included within Auliscus. The genus is unlikely to be confused with any other and is clearly distinguished by the massive ocelli.
