Description: Barrel-shaped cells with wall and with 1-2 chloroplasts, arranged in branched filaments. Reproduction by biflagellate swarmers, 4-16 formed in each of a number of special swollen cells. Swarmer has 2 unequal flagella, 1-2 chloroplasts and a stigma. Sexual reproduction unknown. Stomatocysts known from one species (A. pyrenigerum).

Gender: This genus name is currently treated as neuter.
