Original publication and holotype designation: Woloszynska, J. (1914). Zapiski algologiczne/Algologische Notizen. Sprawozdania z Posiedzen Towarzystwa Naukowego Warszawskiego. Wydzial II 7: 22-26, 1 pl [11 figs].

Description: Cell surrounded by a hyaline lorica constructed of fibrils. Lorica has an inner part, surrounded by an outer part drawn out into 2 or 3 hollow terminal processes. A lateral porus with a short neck passes from the inner through the outer lorica wall. Protoplast with a simple or ramified rhizopodium projecting through the porus, sometimes confounded with a flagellum; parietal chloroplast without stigma and in some species two contractile vacuoles. Reproduction by longitudinal division. One or both daughter cells - amoeboid, without flagella - leave the lorica. Stomatocysts reported from 2 species, formed outside the porus. Planktonic, in ponds and lakes, sporadic, but widely distributed.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
