Holotype species: Roscoffia capitata Balech

Original publication and holotype designation: Balech, E. (1956). Étude des Dinoflagellés du sable de Roscoff. Revue Algologique, Nouvelle Serie 2: 29-52.

Description: Thecate genus with slightly laterally flattened, oval or pot-shaped cells with relatively small epitheca and wide, slightly ascending cingulum. Wide sulcus with one large posteriorly located flagellar pore and two bordering sulcal wings.
