Original publication and holotype designation: Svirenko, D.O. (1926). Al'gologicheskiye issledovaniya r. Dnepra v 1920-1924 gg. [Phycological Research on the Dnieper River in 1920-1924]. Russkii Arkhiv Protistologii 5(1-2): 63-109, plate 4. [in Russian with German abstract]
Description: Thalli colonial, mostly forming 2-celled coenobia, but 4-celled coenobia or single cells are also described; surrounding mucilage envelope poorly developed. Cells in coenobium parallel, attached with their long sides. Cells uninucleate; 1-2 (-8) chloroplasts each with one pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by autospores; 4-8 per sporangium, organized into 2-celled coenobia. Autospores released by gelatinization of mother cell wall. Sexual reproduction and flagellated stages unknown. Dicellula planktonic in eutrophic freshwater; reported from Europe, Asia, Jamaica and USA. Genus usually assigned to Micractinaceae or Scenedesmaceae. Siderocystopsis, distinguished by occurrence of only solitary cells is a likely synonym.
