Description: Thalli spherical to irregular, microscopic colonies to 30 µm diameter, with 4-16 to 64 cells embedded in structureless mucilage. Cells ovoid, 5-12 µm in length with smooth or granular cell walls. Cells uninucleate with single parietal chloroplast in mid portion of cell and single pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by autospores, 2 or mostly 4 per mother cell, released by longitudinal rupture of parental cell wall and remaining attached by the ends or mid portions of cells to wall remains. Flagellated stages and sexual reproduction unknown. Quadricoccus planktonic, common in rivers, fish ponds and lakes; reported from Europe and North America.
