Description: Cells barrel-shaped, connected by short processes and mucilage threads into long filaments. Plastids numerous, discoid. Originally all the species were placed in Lauderia but see the discussion in Hasle (1974a) who recognised D. confervacea, D. pumila (we illustrate only this species) and D. moseleyana. A fairly common marine planktonic genus sometimes forming blooms in coastal waters. Valves saucer-like with radiating costae between which small areolae occur; near the centre these are more-or-less round but they become elongate halfway to the margin. A central fultoportula (occasionally two) occurs with a short simple exit tube through which a thread of polysaccharide is produced connecting the valve to its sibling. Around the edge of the valve face there is a ring of fultoportulae, their exit tubes having conspicuous upright flanged extensions. Adjacent cells interlock by means of these flanges. A single plain exit tube of a rimoportula is found in the circumferential ring (arrow). Internally the central fultoportula may appear raised and has a variable number of buttresses. The fultoportulae in the circumferential rings are low structures internally, usually with 4 buttresses. The internal part of the rimoportula is much larger and usually lies at right angles to the valve margin. Copulae numerous, all split with ligulae. The distal one in Hasle's fig. 74 of D. pumila is plain, but otherwise they are porous, each bearing several transverse rows of areolae. Resting spores occur and are more coarsely silicified spiny versions of the vegetative cells (see Hasle, 1974a, for illustrations).

Comments: The genus is distinguished from Lauderia by the absence of valve face spines. Hasle (1973a) considers there is no justification for retaining Pavillard's name Schroederella.
