Original publication and holotype designation: Lohmann, H. (1902 '1903'). Neue Untersuchungen über den Reichthum des Meeres an Plankton und über die Brauchbarkeit der verschiedenen Fangmethoden. Zugleich auch ein Beitrag zur Kenntnis des Mittelmeerauftriebs. Wissenschaftliche Meeresuntersuchungen, Abteilung Kiel, Neue Folge 7: 1-87.
Description: Cells elongated or ovoid, slightly compressed, of small to medium size (15 to 60 µm). Cingulum circular, slightly displaced to the apical region, thus epitheca smaller than hypotheca. Cells with internal, perhaps siliceous, skeleton which forms 2-3 chambers. No chloroplasts. Marine plankton, so far found only in the Mediterranean Sea and off California.
