Description: Needle-like large (150-500 &m) flagellate divided in "head", that is the very reduced epicone, separated by a cingulum with narrow cingular lists, the "neck", that is the region of the sulcus with narrow lists and the "body", a swollen part of the hypocone which continues into the "tail", the distal part of the very large hypocone which may be bifurcated or multifurcated. In most species, the epicone is inclined in respect to the longitudinal axis of the hypocone, the cingulum is circular or only slightly displaced. The sulcus starts at the cingulum and extends only partly on the hypocone and ends before the hypocone forms the "body". The plate formula is identical to that of Dinophysis Stein but 2 sulcal plates are extremely elongated, forming the ventral side of the "neck". Chloroplast of various color have been described in several species but ultrastructural investigations showed that apparently these are not dinoflagellate chloroplasts but endosymbionts. At least 2 types of endosymbionts have been reported, a eukaryotic and a prokaryotic one. The exact nature and function of the symbionts is so far unknown. Sexual reproduction and cyst formation not known. Marine plankton, worldwide, mostly tropical and subtropical, a few species in temperate waters.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
