Fragilidium Balech, 1965
Holotype species: Fragilidium heterolobum Balech
Original publication and holotype designation: Balech, E. (1959). Two new genera of dinoflagellates from California. Biological Bulletin 116(2): 195-203, 3 figures.
Description: Medium-sized (ca. 50 µm) biflagellated thecate dinoflagellates with thin thecal plates. The cingulum is median and circular, the sulcus is restricted to the hypocone. Plate formula: Po, 4', 8", 9-10c, 7s, 7'", 2"", 1P. The pore plate is irregularly rhomboidal with a characteristic comma-shaped pore. The nucleus is horseshoe-shaped, numerous chloroplasts are present. Cell division in special division cysts, so far only 2 daughter cells observed. In addition, thick-walled spherical resting cysts are known. Although all species are reported to have chloroplasts, some of them apparently are feeding phagotrophic on other dinoflagellates and diatoms. Marine plankton apparently restricted to coastal waters.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
