Myxodinium Cachon, Cachon & Bouquaheux, 1970
Holotype species: Myxodinium pipiens Cachon, Cachon & Bouquaheux
Description: Marine ectoparasitic dinoflagellate of Halosphaera Schmitz (Prasinophyceae). Infectious Gymnodinium-like dinospore settles on the phycoma of the host, developing a distinct cyst wall. This stage has no flagella, but cingulum and sulcus persist. From the region of their junction, a feeding tube extends to the host, perforating its cell wall to the cytoplasm. This is sucked out including the chloroplasts. After termination of food uptake, immediately repeated nuclear and cytoplasmic division starts, resulting in the formation of many sporocytes which are enclosed in a secondary cyst wall. These produce dinospores which may be microspores or macrospores. The fate of the macrospores is unknown, and in experiments, of about 10 days, few microspores reinfected new hosts. Nucleus is a typical dinokaryon with about 40 chromosomes. Ectoparasites of marine Prasinophyceae.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
