Description: Unicellular, biflagellate free-living cells of large size (up to 150 µm long), pyriforme; one species small (26 µm) elongated. Cell wall composed of cellulosic plates with surface ornamentation and pores. Plate formula : Po, Pt, X, 3', 5", 3c, 5s, 5"', 1"" (after Carbonell-Moore 1994b). Plate 1' very narrow, spine-like. Cells with apical horn and antapical spines but without distinct cingulum. The cingular plates are very broad like precingular or postcingular plates. This has caused various authors to establish various plate formula. Nucleus large of the dinokaryon-type, chloroplasts absent but the type species and P. reticulata Kofoid with endosymbionts of the dictyophycean lineage, mistaken as chloroplasts. The mode of food uptake of the heterotrophic species so far unknown. Extemely long ejectisomes are directed to rows of characteristic pores in some hypothecal plates. Cell division by binary fission, the thecal plates are separated by a distinct fission line to the daughter cells like in Gonyaulax Diesing or Ceratium Schrank Resting cysts and sexual reproduction so far not described. Habitat: Marine plankton, most species thrive in warm to tropical waters of all oceans and the Mediterranean Sea. The obligate heterotrophic species seem to prefer water depth below 100m. One species exclusively in Antarctic waters.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
