Styloceras Reverdin, 1919, nom. illeg.

Holotype species: Styloceras longissimum Reverdin

Original publication and holotype designation: Reverdin, L. (1919). Étude phytoplanctonique expérimentale et descriptive des eaux du Lac de Genève. Arch. Sci. Phys. Nat., Ser. 5 1: 302-345, 403-451.

Description: Cell surrounded by a very long lorica rounded in the middle and drawn out into two long terminal processes, which end abruptly and may or may not be open at the ends. No porus. Protoplast located in the central part of the lorica, fixed to it by a thin stalk, contains a parietal chloroplast and a stigma reported to be outside the chloroplast. Neither rhizopodia nor flagella have been recorded. Reproduction and stomatocysts unknown. This uncommon freshwater genus has been observed only in Lake Geneva. This genus presents some features superficially reminiscent of some Bitrichia species, and thus it has been placed in the same family. However, it is very poorly known, and we must await further observations before its taxonomic position can be established.

Information kindly contributed by J. Kristiansen but may now be outdated.

Taxonomic status: The taxonomic or nomenclatural status (or both) of this entity is in some way unresolved and requires further investigation.

Gender: This genus name is currently treated as neuter.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Kristiansen, J. & Preisig, H.R. (2001). Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
