Dzensia Woronichin [Voronichin], 1929

Holotype species: Dzensia salina Woronichin

Original publication and holotype designation: Woronichin, N.N. & Chachina, A.G. (1929). Zur Biologie der Salzeen in des Kulunda Steppe. Izvestiya Glavnogo Botanicheskogo Sada SSSR 28: 149-162. [in Russian with German summary]

Description: Unicellular-colonial; colonies spherical or oval, later irregular, macroscopic, up to 1 cm in diam. (later more), sometimes composed from subcolonies, limited by firm mucilaginous layer ("periderm"); daughter colonies connected sometimes with the original mother colony by gelatinous, hyaline, wide strings, which later disappear. Cells spherical up to oval or shortly rod-like, particularly before division elongated or up to several times longer than wide (involution forms ?), within colony disposed in radial rows and sometimes in gelatinous tubes, which are, however, situated irregularly inside colony. Cell division by pinching, only in one plane, perpendicular to the longer axes of cells. Reproduction by liberating small daughter colonies or by gelatinous clusters containing several cells. This species has been described from a hypersaline inland lake in central Russia (southern Siberia). The generic features do not clearly distinguish it from Aphanothece.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
