Original publication and holotype designation: Thomsen, H.A., Buck, K.R., Marino, D., Sarno, D., Hansen, L.E., Østergaard, J.B. & Krupp, J. (1993). Lennoxia faveolata gen. et sp. nov. (Diatomophyceae) from South America, California, West Greenland and Denmark. Phycologia 32: 278-283, 18 figs, 1 table.
Description: Cells weakly silicified, solitary and planktonic, with a single chloroplast. Frustule bipolar, spindle-shaped in valve view with a curved apical axis; the middle part of the frustule is roughly triangular in shape, superficially resembling certain marine planktonic Nitzschia (subg. Nitzschiella) species. Valve face ornamented by honeycomb pattern of flat, hexagonal chambers arranged along 3 sets of lines. Marginal rimoportula-like structure present on one valve. Cingulum consists of approximately 8 narrow, unornamented bands. Collected from marine waters off South America, California, West Greenland and Denmark.
