Protokeelia C.W.Reimer & J.J.Lee, 1984

Holotype species: Protokeelia hottingeri C.W.Reimer & J.J.Lee

Original publication and holotype designation: Reimer, C.W. & Lee, J.J. (1984). A new pennate diatom: Protokeelia hottingeri gen. et sp. nov.. Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia 136: 194-199, 11 figs.

Description: Frustule in girdle view ovate to elliptical with numerous striate partial bands on the dorsal margin and none on the ventral margin. Valves semi-lunate with rostrate to broadly rounded apices. Valves arranged so that both raphe systems lie on the same (dorsal) margin of the cell; raphe branches near the dorsal margin of the valve face, raphe essentially straight and positioned on a slightly elevated and thickened siliceous ridge. Four conspicuous siliceous thickenings present along the dorsal margin the valve face, each thickening corresponds to an internal fasciculate fibula area and each likewise corresponds to a surface depression on the dorsal and ventral sides; marginal siliceous thickenings and valve surface depressions visible both on the dorsal and ventral sides of the frustule. Striae more or less parallel and doubly areolate; areolae discernable only under SEM as simple poroids. Protokeelia is similar in valvar outline and marginal position of the raphe system to Amphora, Rhopalodia and Cymbellonitzschia; it differs from Amphora in the dorsal position and linear shape of the raphe system, from Rhopalodia in the absence of a canal raphe system, and from Cymbellonitzschia in the numerous girdle bands on the dorsal margin and the depressions on the valve surface. P. hottingeri lives endosymbiotically in foraminifera. Although it has not been observed growing free in nature, it has has been cultured from foraminifera collected in the Red Sea (Israel) and the Great Barrier Reef (Australia). A second, free-living species, P. bassoni, was found sediments collected on tidal flats on an island of Bahrain in the Persian Gulf (Round 1993).

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
