Thaumatomastix Lauterborn, 1899
Holotype species: Thaumatomastix setifera (Lauterborn) Lemmermann
Original publication and holotype designation: Lauterborn, R. (1898). Protozoën-Studien. IV. Theil. Flagellaten aus dem Gebiete des Oberrheins. pp. 1-39, 2 plates. Ludwigshafen am Rhein: August Lauterborn.
Description: Unicellular, non-colonial, biflagellate thaumatomonads with long spine scales (no flagella observed in T. patelliformis or tauryanini, two of three species known only from very few specimens on electron microscope whole mounts); triangular or oval two-tiered body scales also present (except type species ultrastructure unknown, so no evidence for plate scales). PF longer than body; after emerging from apical flagellar pocket bent backwards, used for gliding on surfaces; AF rather short except in T. setifera (in T. salina bears small elongated oval flagellar scales, often somewhat pointed at ends); pseudopodia reported only in T. setifera and T. tripus. Phagotrophs, some algivorous.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
