Description: Unicellular biflagellate heterodynamic cells of medium size (75-100&m including long spines) with cell wall of cellulosic plates. Plate formula Po, 3', 6", 6c, 7s, 1p, 1"", plate 1' not touching the cingulum and bearing a ventral pore. Episome small, compared to hyposome, with small apical horn. Cingulum deeply impressed and displaced, with prominent cingular lists. Sulcus restricted on large hypocone, with no prominent lists. Hypocone large, angular in lateral view, with brushlike spines. A bulge occurs on the hypotheca at the base of each ventral spine. Chloroplasts apparently present. Cyst formation and sexual reproduction unknown. Habitat : Marine Plankton of tropical, oceanic waters in all oceans, rare. Originally described as species of Ceratocorys, Kofoid (1910) created for this species in the genus Gonyaulax the subgenus Acanthogonyaulax which was raised to genus level by Graham (1942).
