Pseudoscytonema Elenkin, 1949
Holotype species: Pseudoscytonema malayense (Biswas) Elenkin
Original publication and holotype designation: Elenkin, A.A. (1949). Sinezeleniye vodorosli SSSR. Monografiya presnovodnykh i nazemnykh S'yanofiseaye, obnaruzhennykh v predelakh SSSR. Spetsial'naya (sistematicheskaya) chast', vyp. II. III. Hormogoneae (Geitl.) Elenk. (okonchaniye). pp. 985-1908, figures 291- 566. Moscow: Izdate'stvo Akademii Nauk SSSR. [in Russian]
Description: Filamentous; filaments rarely solitary, mainly in clusters or fine mats, isopolar, composed of a trichome with both widened ends and of a simple, firm, colorless, thin sheath, opened at the apex. Trichomes Å long, uniseriate, curved or flexuous, isopolar, composed of cylindrical or slightly barrel-shaped cells, which are usually longer than wide, unconstricted or constricted at the crosswalls; they are shorter and wider towards the ends and the constrictions become deeper, the end cell is widely rounded or almost spherical; trichomes clearly widened at both ends. False branching rare to common, 1-2 lateral branches develop after the trichome division between 2 vegetative cells (necridic cells ?). Cells without aerotopes, but often with solitary granules or granules near the crosswalls, often vacuolized at the ends; end cells usually contain one large vacuole. Heterocytes and akinetes lacking. Cell division crosswise, daughter cells grow to original size before the next division. Reproduction by hormogonia, liberating from the ends of trichomes; hormogonia of different length (to 16-cells), but also short. Probably also reproduction by solitary cells (planocytes or monocytes ?). The type species was described from the "dirty pond" in Malaysia, 4 species are known from pools, wet rocks and waterfalls in high mountains (Alps, Carpathians, Himalaya), l species isolated from Argentinian soils.

Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
