Dactylosphaerium Steinecke, 1916
Holotype species: Dactylosphaerium sociale Steinecke
Description: Microscopic, more-or-less spherical colonies with 4-16 to many cells embedded in structureless mucilage. Cells occasionally single, mostly in dense clusters connected by slender, irregular mucous strands that may or may not be conspicuous. Cells spherical to ellipsoid 5-9 &m in diameter or length. Cells uninucleate with single cup-shaped, parietal chloroplast with single pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by spherical autospores or zoospores; 4 or 8 autospores most commonly formed. Zoospores oval, 16 per cell. Sexual reproduction unknown. Dactylosphaerium planktonic, known only from Europe in freshwater. Dactylosphaerium closely related to Dictyosphaerium but differs from it based on the formation of zoospores. Dactylosphaerium jurisii transferred to Pseudodictyosphaerium. D. granulatum Krienitz described without reference to zoospores and taxonomic position is unclear.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
