Holotype species: Rayssiella hemisphaerica Edelstein & Prescott
Original publication and holotype designation: Edelstein, T. & Prescott, G.W. (1964). Rayssiella, a new genus of Oocystaceae (Chlorophyta) from Spring Lake, Michigan. Phycologia 4: 121-125, 9 figs.
Description: Cells in 4-8-(?16)-celled colonies within mucilaginized, moderately expanded mother cell walls, the cells semicircularly disposed, alternating upward and downward with their bases adherent; most colonies compounded of groups of 4 cells with persistent mother cell walls. Cells ellipsoid, cylindrical, to slightly ovoid, 8-30 x 4-11.5 &m. Chloroplast single, parietal, with one pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by formation of (4)-8 autospores remaining within the mother cell wall which becomes mucilaginized. Sexual reproduction and flagellated stages unknown. Rayssiella planktonic in freshwater; reported from Alabama and Michigan (USA), Czechoslovakia, Germany, Indonesia, Paraguay and Switzerland.
