Description: Colonies spherical, with hundreds of small cells arranged in a mulberry form, without a common gelatinous matrix. Cells spherical, with thick cell walls and dark, browish or reddish pigments, but lacking chloroplasts. Cells in colony periphery with two flagella, whereas inner cells lack flagella. Asexual reproduction by division of colony into two daughter colonies or by dissociation of colony into individual, single cells, which divide to form new colony. Palmella-stage (?) and akinetes reported. Method of sexual reproduction unknown. Sycamina known only from original description; it is highly unusual among colonial Volvocales.
