Holotype species: Calkinsia aurea Lackey
Original publication and holotype designation: Lackey, J.B. (1960). Calkinsia aureus gen. et sp. nov., a new marine euglenid. Transactions of the American Microscopical Society 79(1): 105-107, 1 plate.
Description: Elongated, ovoid, grooved flagellate, 40-50 - 10-15 µm, with 2 flagella emergent, heterodynamic, the longer directed anteriorly, the shorter curving posteriorly; osmotrophic, facultatively anaerobic; no chloroplasts but cell gold-colored. Insufficient characters to separate from Sphenomonas and probably a species of that genus. Marine; benthic.
