Original publication and holotype designation: Boo, G.H., Park, J.K. & Boo, S.M. (2013). Gelidiophycus (Rhodophyta: Gelidiales): A new genus of marine algae from East Asia. Taxon 62(6): 1105-1116.

Description: Thallus purple-red (0.22.5 cm), repent, forming entangled mats on upper intertidal rocks; holdfast attached to the substrate by brush-like rhizoidal haptera; uprights mostly absent; decumbent axes terete to slightly compressed, irregularly to subdistichously branched; lateral branches arising at almost right angles. Uniaxial structure with a more or less conspicuous dome-shaped apical cell; cortex consisting of 24 layers of ovoid pigmented cells; medulla consisting of both longitudinal filaments of elongated cells and unicellular rhizoidal filaments with thickened walls, secondarily formed from the innermost cortical and medullary cells. Life history triphasic with isomorphic generations; gametophytes dioecious. Spermatangia in compressed with roundish apices. Cystocarps spherical to ovoid on the apical parts of axes and branches, bilocular, with one ostiole on each surface of the branch; carposporangia elongated, terminal. Tetrasporangia irregularly arranged in apical sori and/or in stichidium-like compressed branchlets; cruciately divided.
