Ekerewekia Kaštovský, Fucíková, Stenclová & Brewer-Carías, 2016
Holotype species: Ekerewekia churiensis Kaštovský, Fucíková, Stenclová & Brewer-Carías
Original publication and holotype designation: Kastovsky, J., Veselá, J., Bohunická, M., Fucíková, K., Stenclová, L. & Brewer-Carías, C. (2016). New and unusual species of cyanobacteria, diatoms and green algae, with a description of a new genus Ekerewekia gen. nov. (Chlorophyta) from the table mountain Churí-tepui, Chimantá Massif (Venezuela). Phytotaxa 247(3): 153-180, 16 figs, 4 tables.
Description: Filamentous green alga with long, truly branched filaments. The type of branching resembles the branching of Cladophora Kützing. Cells of lateral branches are the same width as the main filament. Rounded apical cells do not differ morphologically from other vegetative cells. When the filament breaks, the colorless, firm, H-shaped cell wall reminiscent of Microspora Thuret is visible. One to two (two to four in dividing cells) large rounded to oval chloroplasts each with a distinct pyrenoid fill nearly the entire cell. Growth is both apical and diffuse, occurring throughout the filament. Branching starts by lateral bulging of the cell wall close to the apex. Asexual reproduction by fragmentation of the filament, especially at the ends of the filaments. Sexual reproduction unkown.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
