Description: Unicellular marine phytoplankters; cells small, spherical; 1-2 parietal chloroplasts;oil droplets and peripheral granules present; zoospores with two flagella inserted laterally approximately 1/4 the distance from the anterior end; anterior flagellum longer and beating witha sinusoidal wave, posterior flagellum beating like a sculling oar; flagellar transition region withtwo transitional plates; distinguished from other members of the order by unique DNA sequences representing the 18S rRNA, psaA, psbA, psbC and rbcL genes.
