Holotype species: Centrocerocolax ubatubensis A.B.Joly
Original publication and holotype designation: Joly, A.B. (1966 '1965'). Centrocerocolax, a new parasitic genus of the Rhodophyta. Rickia 2: 73-79.
Description: Parasitic on Centroceras clavulatum (C. Agardh) Montagne. Thallus small, wart-like of merged filaments, attached by penetrating basal and haustorial cells. Carpogonial branches, 4-celled, on pericentral (supporting) cells borne on cells of protruding filaments 5-6 cells below apex, gonimoblasts (carposporangia?) penetrating thallus, not grouped into gonimolobes. Spermatangia at surface on thallus filaments. Tetrasporangia whorled in stichidia on surface filaments, tetrahedrally divided. Differs markedly from previously described parasite, Episporium entroceratis Mobius 1885, recorded on tetrasporangia of Centroceras clavulatum and of doubtful taxonomic affinity.

Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
