Description: Thallus epiphytic, with limited to extensive prostrate axes and assurgent alternately to subdichotomously branched erect axes, attached to the host by unicellular rhizoids arising from periaxial cells. Axes filamentous, with nodal cortication; apices straight to forcipate. Nodes with 3–9 periaxial cells (some species with additional pseudoperiaxial cells), each with 3 or 4 corticating filaments; basipetal cortical initial single, transversely elongate. Spermatangia produced from cortical cells. Cystocarps near the apices, surrounded by involucral branches. Tetrasporangia generally in whorls on nodes, 1 per periaxial cell, involucrate, tetrahedrally divided.
