Description: Erect thalli branched filiformis, solid, parenchymatous, composed of inner cells and one to several layers of pigmented peripheral cells, attached with rhizoidal holdfast. Terminal and lateral phaeophycean hairs present. Growth diffuse. Cells contain many discoidal chloroplasts without pyrenoids. Unilocular sporangia formed from peripheral cells. Plurilocular sporangia very variable in shape, appear intercalary at the terminal thin parts of the thallus. Unispores and plurispores pear-shaped with one chloroplast with stigma, normally biflagellated. Sexual reproduction unknown. Rosenvinge (1935) reported heteromorphic life history in S. tortilis , and Rosenvinge (1935), Sauvageau (1929) and South and Hooper (1976) reported direct type of life history in S. soriferus and S. adriaticus.
