Pachymeniopsis Yamada ex Kawabata, 1954
Holotype species: Pachymeniopsis lanceolata (Okamura) Yamada ex Kawabata
Original publication and holotype designation: Kawabata, S. (1954). On the structure of the frond, and the reproductive organ of Pachymeniopsis lanceolata Yamada (Aeodes lanceolata Okam.). Japanese Journal of Phycology (Sôrui) 2(3): 67-71 (11-15 as well!). [in Japanese]
Description: Lanceolate to palmate, entire or dissected, usually with short stipe and small discoid holdfast. Medulla filamentous. Cortical cells subspherical to elliptical, progressively smaller toward cuticle. Cortex of relatively long, pseudodichotomously branched filaments. Secondary pit connections present. Dioecious. Carpogonium terminating a 2-celled branch in an ampulla. Fertilized carpogonium fusing with hypogynous cell before issuing several connecting filaments that contact auxiliary cells in separate ampullae. A single outwardly directed gonimoblast initial produces a compact, embedded cystocarp. Auxiliary fusion cell formed. Carpostome present. Spermatangia superficial. Tetrasporophyte isomorphic. Tetrasporangia cruciate, attached subbasally to intermediate cortical layer.

Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
