Original publication: Lamouroux, [J.V.F.] (1812). Extrait d'un mémoire sur la classification des Polypiers coralligènes non entièrement pierreux. Nouveaux Bulletin des Sciences, par la Société Philomathique de Paris 3: 181-188.
Type designated in: Schmitz, F. (1889). Systematische Übersicht der bisher bekannten Gattungen der Florideen. Flora oder Allgemeine botanische Zeitung 72: 435-456, pl. XXI.
Description: Thalli calcified, upright, attached to the substratum by a discoid holdfast, with a texture ranging from firm and chalky to soft and mucilaginous. Axes terete, dichotomously to irregularly divided or with percurrent axes, often with many short lateral branches. Construction multiaxial, with a central core of medullary filaments producing anticlinal assimilatory filaments that eventually form a loose outer cortex. Assimilatory filaments sparingly or much divided, generally dichotomous but occasionally tri-polychotomous, composed of ovoid to elongate cells. Adventitious rhizoidal filaments often arising from the lower cells of the assimilatory filaments and acting as medullary filaments and producing additional assimilatory filaments. Outer cortical cells occasionally with terminal hairs or glandular cells. Monoecious or dioecious. Spermatangia arise from outer cortical cells, singly or in clusters on spermatangial mother cells. Carpogonial branches 3-6 celled, arising laterally from lower to mid cortical cells, generally strongly to moderately curved. Gonimoblast developing directly from the carpogonium, initially by a transverse division, eventually forming a diffuse or compact cluster of gonimoblast filaments terminated by a single carposporangium or a short chain of carposporangia. Fusion cell occasionally formed from the cells of the carpogonial branch and rarely the supporting and adjacent cells. Carposporangia either simple or quadripartite. Involucre arising from the cells in the near vicinity of the carpogonial branch, including those of nearby branches and those above and below the supporting cell, rarely the supporting cell itself. Involucral filaments intermingling with the gonimoblast filaments or remaining discrete. Tetrasporangia (where known) borne on a filamentous tetrasporophyte.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
